This unit is designed to reinforce and build on A-level chemistry. Physical chemistry covers quantum ideas and spectroscopy, chemical reactions, their speed and extent, and a study of their energy changes. Inorganic chemistry concentrates on the fundamentals of atomic and molecular structure, and discusses bonding in ionic, covalent and delocalised systems. The ideas are employed in discussing coordination complexes of the first transition- series elements and a study of some of the main group elements. Organic chemistry covers the principles of structures, stereochemistry and mechanisms, and the chemistry of the more common functional groups, emphasising mechanistic understanding. Practical sessions and tutorials are integral to the unit.
