Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides students with enough knowledge of aerodynamics to enhance their understanding and implementation of the discipline for performance studies within the industry. After completing the module students should be aware of the design compromises likely to be met in a successful aircraft design and be able to participate constructively in that design process. Students should also be capable of calculating the primary aircraft performance factors and appreciate the importance of various parameters. On completion of this unit, participants will: Have an appreciation of the significant factors which influence the overall aerodynamic performance of a modern aircraft; Demonstrate sufficient understanding of aerodynamic problems to allow them to contribute towards an efficient overall design; Be able to assess the performance characteristics of a given aircraft; Be able to demonstrate and apply their knowledge within their own working environment; Be prepared for subsequent Core units in aircraft analysis.
