Description including Unit Aims

The product definition process is central to the achievement of competitive advantage in engineering and understanding the role and nature of the process is a fundamental requirement for practising engineers. This unit gives an introduction to the early stages of product definition; preliminary concept definition, full concept definition and product realisation, drawing on Rolls-Royce plc as the principal study subject. It focuses on the environment required for effective design, including innovation, team working, the supply chain, knowledge management and change control and risk management in the context of a complex organisation. Upon completion of this module students will be able to: Understand the depth and complexity of the product definition process and critically reflect on their role within it; Confidently defend the need for innovation in the process and utilise appropriate techniques for developing it in day-to-day activities; Articulate the importance of knowledge management throughout the process and develop strategies for achieving it in their role; Understand the need for and benefits of team working and define the composition and objectives of multi-disciplinary teams that form during the process; Apply the techniques of risk identification, analysis and management.
