The unit is an ab initio course, drawing on textbooks designed for beginners and easily available texts (of which translations are often available). Its aim is to equip students to further develop their proficiency through private study and to engage with French texts as occasion may require in the course of their work for their options and dissertation. In addition, many Old French texts are in modern editions with facing translations; the ability to cross-check the original against the translation is an important skill.
