It deals with themes such as symbolic representation and rites of passage, the relationship between religion and gender, the study of possession cults and folk beliefs, witchcraft, the evil eye, syncretism, and culture contact. In addition to the thematic lectures, which focus on the work of key figures and ideas, there are case studies of pilgrimage in the Andes and of the Kogi of Colombia.
