Description including Unit Aims

The Palaeolithic archaeology of the Old World, from the cultural behaviour of early hominids in Africa (Olduvai Gorge and Ethiopia) to the later developments in the European Palaeolithic. Subjects discussed include the comparative anthropology of modern hunter-gatherer societies, the methodological breakthroughs afforded by taphonomy and site-formation theory, the 'Out of Africa' hypothesis, early burials, and the art of the last hunters in Europe. Assessed partly by coursework, partly by an exam.
