Description including Unit Aims

This unit examines the varied appropriation of landscape beyond subsistence and settlement. The approach will be thematic and will examine topics such as the symbolic and religious constitution of landscape (from sacred topographies of early Holocene hunter-gatherers to the Medieval church), industrial exploitation, systems of defence, communications, contested landscapes, and landscapes of pleasure and recreation. The landscape signatures of these practices and their interpretation will be explored through case studies.
