This Unit compares models and definitions of disability (medical, social, cultural minority, human variation) together with their underlying ideologies and histories. It examines how attitudes towards, opportunities for and rehabilitation of people construed as disabled differ between perspectives and change over time. The extent to which each perspective accounts for the experience of Deaf people and people with an acquired hearing impairment will be examined. This unit will critically examine the interpretation of rehabilitation for contemporary service users and relate this to current disability legislation.
