By the end of this unit, successful students will be able to: describe how timber acquires its strength and structural characteristics; recognise and identify defects in seasoned timber; advise a client on appropriate choice of timber species; use Eurocode 5 to design timber structures and elements including GLULAM beams and columns, built-up beams, stressed-skin floors and various forms of connection.
This aims of the unit are:
1. to equip students to design various building types out of timber, from selecting timber types and grades, analysing timber structures, designing timber elements and connections, to assessing the environmental impact of the design.
2. to teach all the technical aspects required to design in timber and also to develop creativity and problem solving techniques to create timber solutions which are both fit for purpose but also fulfil architectural and other requirements.
3. to provide an awareness of the wider issues surrounding timber design including the responsible sourcing of timber, the practicalities of erecting timber structures and the maintenance issues that need to be considered for the life of timber buildings.
By the end of the course, successful students will:
1. have sufficient knowledge of timber materials and building loadings to design timber structures;
2. be able to analyse and design beams and columns out of timber;
3. be able to design complex timber structures (including moment frames, trusses, gridshells etc);
4. be able to design timber connections including simple connections and moment connections;
5. have a knowledge of different engineered timber products (including Glulam, CLT, timber I beams etc);
6. have a knowledge of the environmental benefits of timber, be able to quantify environmental advantages for specific projects and have knowledge of timber preservation (in both existing and new buildings).
Lectures, examples sheets, example classes and guided reading.
