This unit, which is designed for students of both historical and literary interests, explores how in 5th and 4th century Athens te personal political process of becoming a person/citizen took place, how formal and informal hierarchies were created in a competitive, egalitarian society, how personl relationships became political ones when enacted in the market place, the law-courts or the theatre, how reputations were created and manipulated, and what role women played in the construction of an ideal male citizen. It considers how these issues inform and affect great works of literature, and how these works in turn comment on and challenge prevailing ideologies. Ths units will be based on a range of texts in translation.
