Description including Unit Aims

In order to explore further Britain's Deaf Community today, students should know and understand its politics and the effect of media portrayal within the Deaf Community and in the wider society. This unit will consider the importance of politics and the media in British society for minority groups and those campaigning for social and political change. It will place the deaf political experience within the context of deaf organisations and specific Government departments. Topics will include historical development of deaf politics, the changes in power within the Deaf Community, the impact of deaf Chief Executives, and inter-politics of deaf organisations. The unit will also explore media issues concerning Deaf people. Topics will include Deaf people and media, stereotyping of Deaf people, deaf TV programming, deaf TV/film roles and role of Deaf people in deaf magazines. Students will critically consider interpretations of deaf issues existing in the past and current politics as well as media.
