This Unit takes a life-span perspective on the development of mental health among Deaf people. The unit examines the experience of diagnosis on the individual and family; early interaction patterns and the role of communication in personal and social development; assessment of deaf children and adults in various contexts. Students will consider not only epidemiological data on the rate of mental health but also the cultural construction of Deaf Wellness. A strong link is made between theory and clinical practice using: case studies, an examination of current mental health services and forensic mental health services for Deaf people. Input from professionals in local and national mental health services for Deaf people is provided to help study the evolution of Deaf and hearing professional roles within the field using topics such as 'assessment' to illustrate tensions. Key research findings will be explored alongside Government led investigations into the efficacy of mental health services.
