The Unit of Clinical Foundation Elements is designed to prepare the student for clinical training in subsequent years of the BDS Programme and beyond. Elements of Dental assisting, Disability and special needs, Understanding the clinician-patient interface, Anxiety and pain control and conscious sedation, Periodontology I, and Radiation protection will be taught in term 2.2 and provide introductory training in practical aspects of interactions with patients, teamwok in clinical practice, and mandatory radiological knowledge. The Element of Research concepts, methodologies and project provides an understanding of experimental procedures for studies relating to dentistry (Year 2), opportunities for group learning through structured eLearning (Years 3 & 4), and a four week project which may be laboratory or library-based (4.3). Teaching is delivered through lecture courses, laboratory and clinical sessions, and supported by eLearning methods. A variety of formative and summative assessments will be used, with attainment of approriate clinical competencies required.
