This Unit encompasses a wide ranging consideration and core skills involved in writing for performance that are common to a range of media. These will be examined both in principle and practice, and may include: creating stories, research, narrative story structure, outline & treatment writing, the creation and development of characterisation, dialogue, pace, rhythm and re-drafting. We will take an introductory look at each of the five 'performance platforms' that will be studied for the body of the course, and consider the notion of matching theme to form. We will also examine the working methods and practices of a range of professional writers from a variety of performance media. Study will incorporate consideration of presentational issues such as script layout, computer word processing packages and professional 'tricks of the trade'. Students will be expected to produce a substantial piece (or number of smaller pieces) of original creative writing.
