Description including Unit Aims

This unit will examine the changing world of writing for television. We will analyse a range of genres which may include children's and comedy drama, 'sit-com', 'soaps', drama series and serials, films , documentary-drama, etc. The unit will attempt to place these genres in the wider context of the modern television industry, noting the expansion of independent production sector and the growth of international co-production. Writing for the camera is a special art form, and the unit will examine the particular requirements of working with technology and within collaborative structures of production. The unit will look back over the development of television, and forward to the growing 'convergence' of digital media and it's implications for television writing. Examining the varied roles of writers within the industry, we'll look at the practical aspects of creating and 'pitching' projects and of originating new work. Students will be expected to produce a substantial piece (or number of smaller pieces) of original creative writing. This may take the form of writing an episode for a fictional drama series - in response to a brief and series 'bible' (to be formulated during the unit.)
