This is the opportunity to engage in a substantial piece of self-directed research into a topic arising out of the work done so far. Students will be invited to begin thinking about potential topics during the spring term and, with tutorial support, to refine these ideas into a firm proposal to be submitted at the start of the summer term. Proposals will include a research question, suggested research methods, and available resources through which the question may be explored.Proposals will be considered by academic staff and students will be allocated to appropriate advisors $z thereafter each student will work on their individual topic with tutorial support from the advisor. This support is available throughout the summer vacation period, but students should be alert to the fact that, after the end of term, academic staff are frequently engaged in their own research, often away from Bristol, and that this is also the period when annual leave is taken. This means that students should have established their working pattern and a timeline for completion of the 15000-word dissertation before the end of the summer term so that they can negotiate tutorial or email contact with their advisor during this period. Two copies of the dissertation are submitted by mid-September, in accordance with published regulations.
