The unit seeks to offer students core understandings and awarenesses both as a base for professional practice, and for developing research. It is concerned with an overview of the current organisation of the media industries, and its historical background. The outlook is international but with particular emphasis on ownership structures, management patterns and strategic concerns prevalent in Britain. Seminars with the Unit Leader and leading industry figures serve as the background for a piece of individual research in which the industrial, cultural and commercial forces at work in the genesis of a chosen example of screen material (contemporary or historical), are explored. The research offers students a framework within which to approach industry professionals under the umbrella of the course structure.
