Although predicated upon the idea of novelty, this unit will be concerned with media histories, technologies and cultural form. This is a theory unit which will introduce ways of theorising New Media and use these paradigms to understand changes in the media industries. It will also introduce wys in which media artists have responded and contributed to the emerging discourses of cyberculture. The digitisation of existing media technologies and the development of new platforms and forms of distribution (e.g. mobile, online and through CD & DVD ROM), have prompted new theoretical frameworks, new industrial structures and new explorations by artists. The unit begins by looking at some of the theoretical principles that merge from New Media studies before moving to look at how artists and industries reflect them.
