The unit seeks to examine a range of documentary and fictional genres in film and television. It combines discussion of key concepts with in-class screening and analysis, encouraging a flexible and alert approach to the consideration of philosophical and practical issues that inform historical and current practice. Key concepts that focus lectures, screenings, discussions and analysis include: narrative structure; the relationship between visuals and sound; setting / mise-en-schne; genre; authorship; character construction; use of narration/voice-over; reflexivity; role of technology; questions of audience and reception; and historical contexts.
