Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides the geophysical background for a solid understanding of global (plate) tectonics through an appreciation of the mathematical and physical basis for the processes. Consideration will be given to understanding the theoretical basis for relative motion operating on a sphere, processes of heat flow, convection and geomagnetism, earthquake focal mechanisms. This theoretical consideration will be linked to the geological concepts of plate tectonic settings, i.e. spreading centres, subduction zones, hot spots and associated basin formation.
