Description including Unit Aims

The Dynamics of Hazardous Flows Unit consists of two parts. The first part is an introduction to the dynamics of fluids and solids, including application of the principles of dynamics to fluid and solid motion, interaction of flow with rigid boundaries, basic principles of buoyancy-driven flow and two-phase flow, and stresses and failure in solid bodies. The second part of the unit is an application of these principles to understanding the initial conditions and behaviour of hazardous geophysical flows including landslides, lahars and debris flows, pyroclastic flows and floods. For each type of flow, historical case studies will be used to identify key observations and simplified models for the flows will be developed based on the principles of fluid and solid dynamics and the available field observations. The models will be used to demonstrate the principles of hazard prediction studies.
