Environmental Geoscientists need to able to understand the structure and content of the law pertaining to the environment, as outlined in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and related EU Directives. The unit focuses on the law which affects releases into the environment such as pollution of surface waters, groundwater and the atmosphere. Other subjects include waste management and nature conservation. Similarly environmental geoscientists must understand the toxological effect that poisons have on biota and the environment as a whole. The unit outlines toxicity, dosage and toxic injury, in addition to methods of excretion and detoxification. Toxic injury to various parts of the body are outlined and specific emphasis is placed on understanding the toxological effects of heavy metals, organic pollutants and pesticides.
