Description including Unit Aims

Geological processes cannot be understood without a detailed understanding of the diverse materials which compose the Earth. This unit will study the aspects of mineral structure which control their properties, and will explore the experimental, analytical and spectroscopic methods which can be used to answer fundamental questions about the structure, composition and behaviour of the Earth. The unit will focus mainly on Earth materials at elevated pressures and temperatures because environmental aspects and surface properties of minerals are dealt with in other units.
