The scientific value of trace fossils in modern palaeontological studies (ichnology); to study the morphology, production, and palaeoecological value of various common types of trace fossil - emphasis is placed on a biological / behavioural approach to ichnology. The palaeobiology and evolution of Arthropoda, the most abundant and diverse group of Metazoa; anatomy, systematics, phylogeny, and palaeoecology of the main arthropod groups (trilobites, crustaceans, chelicerates, insects and myriapods) and Cambrian 'Problematica'; to interpret the mode of life and palaeoecology of fossil arthropods; to understand arthropod evolution (including controversial issues); to explore major events in arthropod evolution (e.g. Cambrian explosion, invasion of land and evolution of flight).
