Description including Unit Aims

The unit is the first of two units which aim to equip teachers to take and develop curriculum leadership roles in Citizenship in secondary schools and post-16 education settings. This 10-credit unit is principally concerned with developing participants& knowledge and understanding of Citizenship as a school subject and of curriculum leadership and management, and with analysing their school&s provision for Citizenship prior to undertaking school-based action research to improve the effectiveness of the teaching and leadership of Citizenship education in their own institutions. Together with the second unit, (The Teaching of Citizenship: School Development), it provides the basis for meeting DfES standards for the teaching of Citizenship involving M level study carrying a total of 30 credits.
