Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to provide students with a range of practical strategies relevant to constructing and modifying the curriculum across phases for children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). Techniques of observation and assessment will enable detailed and relevant assessments to be made of children&s learning approaches, skills and behaviour. Students will also consider contrasting supportive educational approaches to meeting individual needs taking account of ASDs, inclusive school contexts and the National Curriculum. Frameworks for the planning, delivery and evaluation of interventions will be discussed. The unit will also include ways of working with parents and other professionals. Special curriculum issues will include use of social scripts, visually structured learning environments, use of ICT, language teaching, social skills groups. This unit aims to equip participants with the skills to bridge from theory into practice, taking account of how children with ASDs learn most effectively.
