Modules in the teaching and learning programme are designed to provide education and training for teachers in higher education. In this module the focus is on effective assessment of student learning and the appraisal of teaching effectiveness. A range of approaches is examined and some current practices explored with a view to developing a critical framework. The module covers developments in self- and peer-assessment and seeks to extend participants& skills in designing effective and efficient assessment and feedback regimes. There are sessions on the purposes and uses of assessment; formative, summative and diagnostic assessment modes; assessment methods and instruments, and the designing of effective assessment tasks/questions. Key outcomes are the development of a critical framework for thinking about assessment and the appreciation of the potential of e-assessment. Although targeted at new academics, the unit will be of interest to any academic involved in the writing of unit and programme specifications.
