The first Professional Studies lecture programme is sub-titled "Business Management" and aims to present an overview of engineers in business, introducing the environment in which today's businesses exist. The objective is to create interest and awareness and also to introduce the basic knowledge and skills that are necessary to manage an engineering business. Important transferable skills are also taught, for application and development in departmental and university activities. During the Level 2 programme, students gain an appreciation of the nature of innovation. Sub-titled "Managing Innovation", lecturers focus on the ways in which an innovative approach can enhance all aspects of an organisation's performance. Individual and group creativity is examined, leading to an understanding of how product, service and process innovation can lead to superior performance for the organisation and real job satisfaction for the individual. The emphasis on transferable skills continues. Each lecture programmes leads to a written examination.
