The aim for this unit is to give every design student an introduction to working in a multi-disciplinary group project. The students will undertake at least one design-build-test project involving the specification, conceptual design, detail design, construction and testing of an engineering artefact. The aims of the unit are to introduce & apply the fundamental principles of engineering systems design, creative & detail design tools & techniques, team working & design/time management skills, the process of design trade-off & compromise, the process of product realization & evaluation. On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to outline the role of the design process in produce development, and describe its general structure. By understanding systems design, and the role of trade-off & compromise in a multi-disciplinary project.; understanding the role of teamwork in design; taking a simple design exercise from specification through to delivery of a manufactured artifact and contribute to a multi-disciplinary group project in design. The student will have skills in specification formulation, concept generation and evaluation, design documentation & presentation, team interaction & time management.
