The student will obtain a working knowledge of how engineering designs are represented and realised in the various engineering disciplines and be able to understand the different styles/practices and protocols used. The student will get hands-on experience at producing engineering drawings (both manually and using CAD techniques). In addition, the student will learn about a wide range of manufacturing/construction techniques achieving a working knowledge and understanding of the underlying principles and constraints. The aims of the unit are to introduce product representation and communication in design, to develop representation skills and to introduce realisation technologies from a variety of engineering disciplines, and to place them into a coherent framework On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to: understand the principles of project management and version controlling to a developing design solution, describe the role of the computer in design as an agent for creating, manipulating and communicating models; describe and use the principal languages of design in drawings and diagrams and outline approaches to manufacturing and construction, and describe the advantages and disadvantages of different techniques and the constraints that they place on the designer. The student will have skills in production and interpretation of engineering drawings and diagrams, use appropriate CAD tools, organising and presenting information on product realisation technologies; group study and interaction.
