Description including Unit Aims

This unit will give a brief introduction to four mathematical methods: tensor calculus, which underlies the whole of fluid and solid mechanics; calculus of variations - used in optimisation and in control theory; conformal mapping - an elegant technique for solving two-dimensional field problems; contour integration - extension of integration techniques to the complex plane, used in control and other systems.
