In Research Project 4 each student will undertake a large research project. On the H150 programme the research project will have been defined as part of a two-year project sponsored by one of the engineering design degree programme&)s sponsoring companies. The project for each student will be designed to make him, or her, an expert in some aspect of the large group design project that will take place in Year 5. It will be possible for two or more students to work on linked aspects of a common theme, but with separate objectives and reporting. The projects will involve research into the design, and analysis of existing designs of a type of artefact or component. Where possible models will be used to improve understanding.. Students are expected to show some original work either in the way in which they re-organise and give new insights into existing material or in some new approach to analysis of a design or problem. The project aims to give students the ability to tackle and solve real open-ended investigations, to plan and organise their own work and to communicate their results, through written, oral and poster presentations.
