This unit aims to introduce students to Old English and to something of the richness and range of Old English poetry. Students are given instruction in the basic elements of Anglo-Saxon grammar, vocabulary and verse form, and are helped to read (in the original) some examples, for example &The Dream of the Rood&, &The Battle of Malden&, &Wulf and Eadwacer&, extracts from &Beowulf&, and to consider their reception in contemporary culture.
