The unit introduces students to the skills necessary for the critical appreciation of poetry. The reading of poems provides the foundation of the course; through that reading, students will be introduced to literary terms such as genre, mode, rhythm, metre, lexis, and rhetoric. Students will also be asked to consider the importance of critical theory and historical context.
