The unit will focus on the Arthurian legend from early medieval to modern times: the origins of the legend in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History; the first Arthurian 'romances' by Chretien de Troyes; the most influential of the English redactions - Malory's Morte D'Arthur; the use made by Spenser of Arthurian material in The Faerie Queene; and Victorian and 20th-century responses to Malory (e.g. by Tennyson, Arnold, Morris, Mark Twain).
