The purpose of this course is to introduce you to some of the central issues and debates in literary criticism and theory. These will be encountered via the study of certain prescribed texts: four novels, and one play. By considering these texts in the light of designated topics, you will become acquainted with the guiding ideas (and, to an extent, with the specialized vocabularies) of some of the most influential schools of criticism and theory in the twentieth century, such as- feminism, narratology, psychoanalysis, and new-historicism. While the course is an independent unit, it is expected that the issues addressed during the semester will be of importance to you throughout your studies.
