Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore the process of literary imitation in a selection of texts which adapt rhetorical, dramatic or thematic elements from other works. These examples will be studied closely and comparatively, with the aim of identifying precisely how certain elements of one literary work are transposed to another, and what is lost or gained in translastion. In order to make a thorough exploration of the methods of imitiation and adaptation, this unit will involve some practical, applied activity; i.e creative-writing exercises. Students will be helped to make productive use of their understanding of mimetic and inventive techniques by writing their own short adaptations.
