The poetry unit aims to give students familiarity with a broad swathe of modern poetry by some of its best practitioners. Group analysis of texts feeds directly into an awareness of craft and techniques that students can draw on in writing their own poems. In particular the unit aims to focus on the close relationship between content and form, and examine the possibilities and difficulties of both free verse and formal or given structure.
