This unit will cover (a) issues of book production, theories of editing, and palaeography as exemplified by particular texts; (b) discussion of literary-critical and theoretical approaches; (c) the study of a particular and significant year in English literary history, with the aim of recovering the diversity of its literary producation and considering how that diversity is represented by conventional literary histories. Assessment will be by two 2,500 word essys, and practical exercises.
