This unit will build on the second-year cinema course that introduces issues and debates in contemporary French film production. This seminar-based course will be organised around a number of key themes and recent trends in French cinema. The content (films, directors, movements, technologies of style etc) will vary from year to year. The aim will be to explore key issues around aesthetics, cultural representation, spectatorship and reception, and the socio-economic context of French cinema. Issues and debates covered will include:
Popular film genres (big-budget box-office hits $� Taxi, Am�lie, Les Choristes), parallels with US Cinema (Hollywood) and trans-national production New social realism and politics from La Haine (1995) onwards Thrillers and $�neo-noir&� : Cach�, 13 Tzameti and De Battre mon coeur s&�est arr�t� (all 2005) Auteur film: Post-new wave heritage: Garrel, Godard, Rivette and T�chin�, and the $�Young French Cinema&� through Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis, Bruno Dumont and Pascale Ferran Beur Cinema Women Filmmakers Actors, Stars and New Faces Hollywood Remakes Heritage Cinema and Literary Adaptations Digital Technology and Stylistic Change Cinema and Economy
