Description including Unit Aims

This unit will introduce students to the 'auteur' tradition in French cinema, looking first at a selection of typical French films from the silent era to the present day and then concentrating on the work of a well-known French author-director e.g. Jean Renoir. There will be a weekly film-viewing session and a weekly two-hour seminar, sometimes jointly with a 4th year undergraduate French group. The assessment will be principally by essay presented at the end of the unit. Students will also be expected to offer at least one assessed seminar presentation, usually involving the detailed analysis of a sequence of a chosen film on video-cassette. Apart from library resources, students will have access to an extensive collection of French films in the self-access video library of the Language Centre.
