Description including Unit Aims

This unit consists of two elements, 1) Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, Subglacial Lakes and their Drainage Systems and 2) the Microbiology and Biogeochemistry of Aquatic. Ecosystems. Lectures will cover from the physical environmental (detection of basal hydrology and processes), through the chemical environment (confirmation of basal hydrology and processes via ice core hydrochemistry, which has a large microbiological component) to the biogeochemical environment (aquatic biogeochemistry and microbial ecology). While the physical and chemical environment lectures will mainly use examples from the cryosphere, the biogeochemistry element will be considered for a range of aquatic environments in connection with human impact and environmental change.
