Description including Unit Aims

In this unit we wil look at various aspects of the image of Austria, both as it exists in Austria (Selbstwahrnehmung) and in the wider world (Fremdwahrnehmung). Students will be provided with a thorough introduction to relevant cultural theory and will be encouraged to reflect on different concepts of culture, identity, mentality, stereotype and cliche. In addition, the role of Austria will be examined in different types of media such as literature, film, TV and press. Taking into account different perspectives, our aim is to uncover the perception of Austrian culture and identity, both as perceived by Austrians and by the external world.
