The unit explores German poetry which $ypaints a picture&) by evoking vivid pictorial images in the readers&) minds. Examples are drawn from periods between the 17th and early 20th centuries and accompanied by brief extracts from theory which throw light on how the poetry works. Informal talks introduce students to each new body of material and lead into in-depth class discussion. Weekly handouts detail the necessary preparation for each class. The unit aims to enable students to develop their capacity for critical analysis and the presentation of independent research in oral and written form. Assessment is based on an essay and a 2-hour examination.
