Description including Unit Aims

Taking Nuremberg as a case study, this unit will explore civic life and culture in a period of major political, religious and intellectual upheaval; the prime focus will be patronage, trade, intellectual and artistic exchange, literary life, the introduction of the Reformation and its effect on all aspects of the city’s life and identity. We shall also consider the use made by subsequent eras, especially the National Socialists, of Nuremberg’s iconic past. An optional trip to Nuremberg before Christmas to explore the city and work on original sources in the city archives is planned.
