This unit will introduce students to important themes and developments in art, theory and postmodernism since 1980. By concentrating on a range of artists and art, students will obtain both a broad understanding of contemporary art and a deep understanding of particular art works. Against a social, political and philosophical background, the unit will introduce important issues at play in contemporary art, including transgression, post-colonialism, institutional critique, the $death of painting&, the $death of the author&, the use of the body, the place of narrative and the impact of new technologies.
