This unit will consider the art and visual culture of the Italian city-republics in the fourteenth century, when the small city-states of Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto and others fiercely guarded their own independence, but were also closely engaged with one another, as they vied for political, economic and artistic supremacy. In these city-republics art was commissioned to serve political ideology, the public religious activity of the city commune, and the more private religious devotion of smaller groups and individuals. The unit will focus, initially, on the city-republic of Siena, but will keep in mind the relationship between Siena and its neighbouring city-republics.
