Description including Unit Aims

This unit will introduce students to the art historical issues and curatorial practices associated with fifteenth and sixteenth century decorative arts, with special reference to the large collection of Italian Renaissance maiolica in the Holburne Museum (Bath). Students will have the opportunity to learn how to assess these works of art as physical objects, exploring them at the museum and through a series of seminars led by Dr String and by Dr Matthew Winterbottom, Curator of Decorative Arts at the Holburne. The unit will also investigate the gendered nature of maiolica and its predominantly female subject matter. Visits to other important collections of Renaissance decorative arts (V&A, Wallace Collection, Ashmolean) with meetings with experts from those institutions will provide further context for our study.
