This unit aims to introduce students to key concepts in lexicology and to the development of the lexicon of Spanish from Latin to the computer age. Content will include processes of lexical change from derivation to loanwords; significant historical phases in the development of Spanish; the lexical influence of foreign languages (including Germanic, Arabic, other Romance languages, Amerindian languages, and English); lexical differentiation of Peninsular and Latin-American Spanish; neological processes in the twentieth century; and the history and problems of Spanish lexicography.
