Popular song is one of Brazil's most important forms of cultural expression and has a particularly significant place in the country's cultural history for two reasons. Firstly, because it has been central to an often heated debate on what constitutes national identity, and secondly, because it has always been closely intertwined with Brazil's literary tradition, poetry in particular. This course examines key periods in the formation of Brazilian society through the traditions of song and poetry, from the late 19th century to the present. The course will also emphasise the inter-relationships between culture and politics in the work of some of Brazil's foremost song-writers and poets.
